Immanuel Lutheran Communities offers series on caregiving
KALISPELL – “Caregiving affects us all,” says Carla Wilton, executive director of Buffalo Hill Terrace at Immanuel Lutheran Communities. “Everyone at some point in their lifetime will either be a caregiver or receive care.”
To help provide information on this crucial and universal topic, Immanuel Lutheran Communities will offer six weeks of caregiver education and support on Fridays from 2-3:30 p.m. beginning March 24 at Buffalo Hill Terrace.
The series “looks at various areas that touch caregivers and covers both the joys and stresses involved in caregiving,” Wilton said. “The focus is on resources, education and support. The curriculum is set up in such a way that each session can stand on its own. We want people to be able to select what works for them in terms of their schedule and areas of interest.”
Series topics are:
· Planning Ahead, March 24.
· Finding, Creating and Using Resources, March 31.
· Self-Care for the Caregiver, April 7.
· Family Dynamics and Communication, April 14.
· Financial Well-Being, April 21.
· Dementia and Chronic Illness, April 28.
“Part of Immanuel Lutheran Communities' mission is being a resource to residents of the Flathead Valley,” Wilton said. “For many years we've seen the role caregivers are taking on grow, and Immanuel has expanded the resource offerings including the Alzheimer's and Dementia caregiver support group, educational lectures and our speaker's bureau.”
“This series provides education, tangible resources and support,” she said. ”Information is knowledge and can relieve some of the stresses involved in these situations. Caregivers can often feel alone through these situations, and a diverse group like this can be helpful by providing some emotional support. Hearing alternatives and what's worked for other caregivers is helpful.”
The series is a collaborative project with the Flathead County Agency on Aging who provides in-home respite services. To register for any or all of the classes, visit www.ilcorp.org or call 406-752-9625. To learn more about AOA respite services call 406-758-5730.
