Job Description

The Hockaday Museum is looking for a Receptionist to join its team for the peak visitor season. The Receptionist is the first contact visitors have with the Hockaday Museum and therefore must create a positive first impression. Reporting to the Museum Operations Manager, he/she attends to visitors and provides information regarding the museum and its programs to the public. This position is in charge of directing calls to appropriate staff, as well as completing a variety of administrative and event preparation duties. Must be dependable and trustworthy, and present a professional image to the public. Previous reception and event experience preferred but not required.

  • Greet museum patrons and collect admission fees
  • Provide assistance to gift shop customers and handle sales transactions
  • Direct incoming calls, offer information on exhibits and events, and provide accurate messages to staff
  • Perform various event and program tasks including:  tracking RSVPs, picking up supplies, set up and take down for artist talks, receptions, education programs, etc.
  • Assist with class registrations and dues
  • Maintain gift shop displays
  • Process web store orders
  • Responsible for museum presentation including: restock bathrooms, dust and clean displays and exhibits, maintain organized reception area
  • Assist with other miscellaneous office duties including filing, bulk mailings, data entry,  maintaining supplies and printed materials, copying, and distributing mail
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Word and Excel
  • Initiative to carry out work assignments with little supervision and in a timely manner
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong attention to detail
  • Capable of following set procedures
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs and climb ladders
  • Customer service experience in retail and/or nonprofit organization
  • Experience with multi-phone line system and office equipment
Seasonal position is for 14-20 hours per week, varied hours from Tuesday through Saturday, some evenings required. Wage: $10 per hour to start. Position may be extended long term.
