MARK YOUR CALENDARS: FLATHEAD TIMBER TOUR SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER DATE

Manufacturing Month in the Flathead Valley Features Good Neighbor Authority Sale as the Site of Flathead Timber Tour

KALISPELL, MT—The Montana Department of Natural Resources & Conservation (DNRC), the Flathead National Forest, and the Kalispell Chamber of Commerce announced they will jointly host the annual Flathead Timber Tour on Thursday, October 17th, 2019 from 12:00pm to 5:00pm as a part of the Flathead Manufacturing Month in October. The Flathead Timber Tour will take place on the site of the Liger Timber Sale, a recent Good Neighbor Authority (GNA) project in the Flathead National Forest.

The Flathead Timber Tour is an opportunity for the public to learn more about the manufacture and production of wood products in the Flathead Valley. Participants will experience on the ground demonstrations of timber harvest techniques and hear from local experts about the importance and value natural resources play in our local economies and communities.

“This is a unique opportunity for Montanans to get an up-close and personal look at the work being done the ground through the Good Neighbor Authority,” said Greg Poncin, Northwestern Land Office Area Manager for the DNRC. “Through GNA, we are able to add capacity to the Flathead National Forest to help them accomplish important forest restoration goals, better protect communities from wildfire, and support local economies.”

Though the Flathead Timber Tour is held annually, this is the first year the onsite tour will feature a GNA project. GNA is a state-federal partnership that increases management activities and restoration outcomes on federal lands in Montana, and the Liger Timber Sale is the first GNA sale to be done on the Flathead National Forest. St. Onge Logging submitted the winning bid to purchase the sale located southeast of Hungry Horse and Martin City in Flathead County, and more specifics about GNA and the harvest of federal timber will be available during the tour.

“I am excited that the Chamber’s Timber Tour is highlighting the Good Neighbor Authority work we are doing with the DNRC,” said Chip Weber, Forest Supervisor for the Flathead National Forest. “With their help, we are getting after our restoration and fuels goals and our already good working relationship just keeps getting stronger.”

As one of the many events during Manufacturing Month in October, the Flathead Timber Tour is often well attended and this year participation will be capped at 80 people on a first come, first serve basis. Participants will meet at 12:00pm at the Kalispell Chamber of Commerce and depart for the Liger Timber Sale site at 12:30pm. Expected return from the Liger Timber Sale site back to the Kalispell Chamber of Commerce is 5:00pm. Every participant is required to travel on buses supplied by the Chamber to the Liger Timber Sale; no separate vehicles will be allowed. Questions about accommodations should be directed to the Kalispell Chamber of Commerce. Register for the Timber Tour here

The Flathead Timber Tour is an annual event to inform the greater Flathead Valley community of the importance and value natural resources play in our economy and way of life. This year, the tour is jointly hosted by the DNRC, Flathead National Forest, and Kalispell Chamber of Commerce and will focus on the manufacture and production of wood products with an onsite tour of the Liger Timber Sale.
