Montana Department of Transportation Proposes Project to Widen Montana Highway 40 Near Whitefish

WHITEFISH - The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) would like to notify the public and seek comments on a proposal to widen a segment of Montana Highway 40 (MT-40) in Flathead County.

The project begins at the intersection of MT-40 and U.S. Highway 93 (US-93) south of Whitefish and extends easterly 2.6 miles to Dillon Road.

Proposed work includes widening the road to add a two-way left-turn lane, applying a new overlay, and finishing with a seal and cover (chip seal), upgraded pavement marking, signage and guardrail. The purpose of the project is to promote safer traffic flow and preserve the distressed pavement.

Construction is tentatively planned for 2022, depending on completion of design and availability of funds. New right-of-way and relocation of utilities may be required. MDT staff will contact all potentially affected landowners prior to performing survey work on their land. Staff will again contact landowners prior to construction regarding property acquisition and temporary construction permits.

There is also a study currently considering the potential impacts an expansion to five lanes would have to traffic congestion, safety, intersection operations, access, adjacent properties, and environmental concerns for the entire MT-40 corridor from the US-93 junction to the U.S. Highway 2 junction near Columbia Falls.
