The Northwest Montana History Museum presents “Freaks” for October’s Movie Night at the Museum. The film screens at 7 pm Tuesday, October 22. The film tells the story of circus trapeze artist Cleopatra who is already involved with another circus performer, but initiates a relationship with Hans, a midget working in the sideshow. It’s not Hans who Cleopatra is attracted to, but the money she knows he will inherit. At first, all goes as planned, but when a drunken Cleopatra reveals her true colors, the sideshow performers take their revenge on behalf of their friend. “Freaks” was produced and directed by Tod Browning and starred Wallace Ford, Leila Hyams, Olga Baclanova, Roscoe Ates and Harry Earles. While the film was a box-office failure when first released, it was revived in the 1960’s as a Hollywood classic and was featured at the 1962 Venice Film Festival. The film became a cult classic and was selected in 1994 for preservation by the United States Film Registry which preserves films that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. Doors open at 6:30 pm and admission and popcorn are free. Soda pop, water, beer and wine are available for purchase. Seating is provided, but viewers are welcome to bring their own cushions or seating. Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2024, the Northwest Montana History Museum brings the past alive through exhibits, artifacts, educational programs and events.
