Movie Night at the Museum: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

Tuesday, November 19, 2024 (7:00 PM - 10:00 PM) (MST)

Description

November’s featured film for Movie Night at the Museum will be the Tracy/Hepburn classic “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”. The movie screens on Tuesday, November 19 at 7 pm in the Northwest Montana History Museum. The film was the ninth movie starring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn and also featured Sidney Poitier and Katharine Houghton. Released in 1967, the comedic drama tells the story of a liberal couple forced to face the reality of an interracial marriage when their daughter (Houghton) announces her engagement to an African-American man (Poitier). While most reviews were favorable, some critics felt that the film presented an idealized view of the issue of interracial marriage rather than dealing with the real-life challenges faced by most couples during that period. Tracy was ill during filming but insisted on finishing the movie, which was completed 17 days before he died in June 1967. Saying it would be too painful for her, Hepburn never saw the completed film which was released six months after Tracy’s death. The film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards with Katharine Hepburn winning best actress and William Rose taking home the best writing award. Doors open at 6:30 pm and admission and popcorn are free. Soda pop, water, beer, and wine are available for purchase. Seating is provided, but viewers are welcome to bring their own cushions or seating.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2024, the Northwest Montana History Museum brings the past alive through exhibits, artifacts, educational programs and events. The Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at 124 Second Avenue East, Kalispell. For information call 406-756-8381.
